Company History
The first hospital in Woodland grew out of the pioneering efforts of Kathleen McConnell in 1907. A registered nurse, Miss McConnell rented a two-story home at 10 College Street with her two sisters, also graduate nurses, and established the Woodland Sanitarium, a hospital with a nine-bed capacity and a second-floor bedroom converted for surgery.
Miss McConnell sold the Woodland Sanitarium in 1911 to four Woodland physicians: Dr. Fred Fairchild, Dr. Chester Fairchild, Dr. Hiram Lawhead and Dr. William Blevins, Sr., who then moved the facility to a small lot on the corner of Third and Cross Streets and founded the Woodland Clinic Hospital and Medical Group.
Physicians of the Woodland Clinic Medical Group owned the hospital from 1911 to 1960. In September of 1960, the facility adopted a not-for-profit status and became Woodland Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, the physicians moved their clinic to its current site at Fairchild Court.
In 1967, with help from the community, a new hospital was completed next door to the clinic. Thirteen years later, it was expanded to its present size. In 1992, the hospital and clinic merged to form one organization: Woodland Healthcare. Later, Woodland Healthcare affiliated with Catholic Healthcare West, the largest Catholic healthcare system in the western United States comprised of 42 hospitals and two medical practice groups in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Today, Woodland Healthcare is an integrated organization: its clinics, providers, hospital and surgery center are all part of one system. This allows you and your family to conveniently access any of our outpatient, inpatient and educational and support services.
