Mathematica

Company Overview

Mathematica is the insight partner that illuminates the path to progress for public- and private-sector changemakers. We apply expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice, translating big questions into deep insights that weather the toughest tests. Driven by our mission to improve public well-being, we collaborate closely with our clients to improve programs, refine strategies, and enhance understanding.

Our more than 1,400 experts work across the country and around the globe, partnering with federal agencies, state and local governments, foundations, universities, professional associations, and businesses. Mathematica is reimagining the way the world gathers and uses data, surfacing evidence that guides decisions in areas ranging from health, education, child welfare, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, criminal justice, and international development.

For 50 years, we’ve been known as the pioneers behind research and policy advancements that have transformed the world. We conducted the first social policy experiment in the United States, the New Jersey Negative Income Tax Experiment, to test ways of encouraging people with low income to work. Today, we continue to dive into urgent social challenges right alongside our partners, determining how action leads to outcomes that help people, institutions, and communities affect real change in real time.

Led by President and CEO Paul Decker, we understand that quality insights begin with diverse perspectives, so we foster a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our work and among our staff, and we thrive because of it. Our work is at its best when we include different perspectives and draw on diverse networks. As an employee-owned company, we create a shared vision that provides opportunities and incentives based on staff interest, spurs creativity and collaboration, and supports our long-term effectiveness and growth. Mathematica’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) creates a unique ownership culture that allows us to focus on long-term growth and impact, not just quarterly results. Equally important, employee-ownership offers our teams flexibility to work on projects that best support and deliver on our mission of improving public well-being. Mathematica’s headquarters are in Princeton, New Jersey, and we also have offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Oakland, California; Seattle, Washington; Tucson, Arizona; Washington, DC; and Woodlawn, Maryland. In 2018, we acquired EDI Group, an international research and data collection organization, expanding our capabilities and our presence in the United Kingdom and Africa.

Mathematica. Progress Together.

A vision plan is available that covers annual exams with just a co-pay. This plan provides an allowance for glasses or contacts, discounts on lens enhancements, savings on Lasik, and special offers.

Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts

Individual health care and dependent care accounts allow employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for dependent care and out-of-pocket medical expenses for themselves or their dependents.

Health Savings Account

A health savings account allows employees in the high deductible health plan to use pre-tax dollars for out-of-pocket medical expenses for themselves, spouses, and children. Employees decide how to use this account, including whether to save it or spend it for health care expenses.

Life and Accident Insurance

Mathematica offers income protection to our employees by covering the cost of life and accident insurance. In addition, employees may purchase supplemental group term life insurance for themselves, their spouse or domestic partner, and their dependent children.

Temporary and Long-Term Disability Coverage

Disability insurance helps an employee meet continuing financial obligations if temporarily or permanently disabled. This benefit provides some salary replacement to those who are unable to work due to a non-occupational illness or injury. Mathematica also provides workers' compensation insurance in the event of a workplace illness or injury.

Retirement Plans
Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)

At Mathematica, we believe that being an employee-owned company has significantly contributed to our success. In addition, ownership by employees provides the framework for long-term growth. The company makes contributions to the ESOP annually, which are then invested in Mathematica stock on behalf of eligible employees. Read more.

401(k) Profit-Sharing Plan

Mathematica's 401(k) profit-sharing plan is designed to help employees save for retirement by allowing them to set aside pre- or post-tax income, which the company then matches based on company profits. The company also makes a base contribution for each eligible participant, whether or not they choose to make deferrals to the plan. The base contribution is also derived from company profits. Employees decide how the contributions will be invested from a broad set of investment options.

Time Off
Paid Time Off (PTO)

Mathematica recognizes that individual lives do not always fall into well-defined categories. Therefore, PTO may be used for any purpose: vacation, your own illness, care for a family member, religious observance, or a personal emergency. Employees earn additional PTO as service grows, up to a maximum of 30 days per year.

Holidays

Mathematica recognizes eight paid holidays.

Professional Growth
Career Development

At Mathematica, we emphasize continuous learning and individual growth. Our small-company environment is ready to help you pursue a career path that matches your abilities and desire to achieve. Career development is encouraged through on-site training, job performance discussions, and internal job postings.

Tuition Reimbursement

Mathematica is committed to supporting staff who pursue continued professional growth and career development. We consider reimbursement for educational expenses an important vehicle for addressing that need. The tuition reimbursement benefit provides employees with assistance to increase performance effectiveness in their present positions and encourages them to obtain skills, knowledge, and abilities that may improve their opportunities for career advancement within the organization.

Work Life Benefits
Online Therapy

Online therapy is available free-of-charge to all employees and their dependents ages 13 and older. This service offers confidential access to a network of thousands of licensed mental health providers and behavioral health care professionals through a mobile app and web platform.

Employee Assistance Program

Mathematica's Employee Assistance Program provides employees and members of their household with confidential advice and support in addressing a broad range of personal concerns and life issues. Coordinators are available anytime to listen or make referrals to local resources in the community.

Transportation Benefit

The transportation benefit permits employees to pay for certain transportation-related expenses with pre-tax dollars, thereby avoiding most income and payroll taxes. It also allows for convenient home delivery of monthly passes from a growing list of transit and parking providers.

Bicycle Commuter Benefit

The bicycle commuter benefit is employer-funded. It provides a reimbursement of up to $20 per month for certain bicycle expenses to employees who regularly use a bicycle for a substantial portion of the travel between their residence and place of employment.

529 Plan—College Savings Plan

This plan allows employees to save for their own or a family member's educational expenses through payroll deduction. The earnings in a 529 plan grow tax deferred, and, when the beneficiary of the plan is enrolled in an educational institution, qualified withdrawals are tax free.
