Mission

The Medical College of Wisconsin seeks to be a national leader in the education and development of the next generation of physicians and scientists; to discover and translate new knowledge in the biomedical sciences; to provide cutting-edge, interdisciplinary and compassionate clinical care of the highest quality; to improve the health of the communities we serve.

Patient Services

Approximately 1,200 Medical College of Wisconsin physicians provide adult patient care as the Medical College Physicians and pediatric patient care through Children’s Specialty Group, a joint venture with Children’s Hospital and Health System. The Medical College of Wisconsin physician practice includes doctors in every specialty and subspecialty of medicine.

Each year, Medical College of Wisconsin physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and psychologists care for more than 390,000 patients, representing nearly 1.6 million patient visits.

Medical College of Wisconsin physicians practice at three major affiliates - Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center - and many other hospitals and clinics in the Milwaukee area.

Education

There are more than 1,200 students enrolled in educational programs at the Medical College. This includes 817 medical students, and more than 400 graduate students.

College faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 200 physicians in fellowship training through The Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.

The College provides ­continuing ­medical education to more than 40,000 health professional registrants each year.

Research

The Medical College of Wisconsin is a major national research center, in fact, the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin.

In FY 2008-09, faculty received approximately $157 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which approximately $142 million is for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In the federal government’s FY 2009, the College received $110 million in NIH funding and ranked 43rd among the nation’s 131 medical schools for NIH research funding.

The College’s research enterprise is focused on strategic, prioritized areas of research involving interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and physicians with the goal of rapidly translating discoveries into advances for patient care. College faculty conducted more than 2,500 research studies, including clinical trials, in FY 2008-09.

Technology Transfer

In FY 2008-09, College faculty and students reported 52 new discoveries and inventions to the College’s Office of Technology Development. The College currently has 250 pending and issued patents in the U.S. and foreign countries. To bring these new technologies and related products to market, the College has research and development affiliations with campus institutions, other major universities and research institutions, health care organizations, as well as government and venture capital groups in Wisconsin and elsewhere. The College has licensed technologies to 47 pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and medical device corporations.

Public and Community Health

The Medical College of Wisconsin invests significantly in expanding its community mission to build strategic community-academic partnerships that have the greatest impact on Wisconsin’s most critical health needs. More than 150 faculty from over 20 departments and centers are working with greater than 200 diverse community groups to advance public and community health in the metro Milwaukee area and throughout Wisconsin.

Company History

The Medical College of Wisconsin is a private, national, freestanding institution. The College was founded in 1893 as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine. In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school.

The school then continued as a private, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to The Medical College of Wisconsin. The College has approximately 13,500 alumni.

Health Insurance
A comprehensive PPO plan design provides eligible employees and their families with extensive medical and prescription drug coverage and allows an employee to choose their provider. In-network choices will maximize your savings and reduce your out-of-pocket costs.


Dental Insurance
Comprehensive dental coverage is available to eligible employees. The PPO plan design allows eligible employees and their families to select the dentist of their choice. In-network choices will maximize your savings and reduce your out-of-pocket costs.


Vision Insurance
Materials only plan covers items such as frames and lenses as well as contact lenses. Eye exams are covered under the health plan. Coverage levels are greater when a PPO provider is utilized.


403(b) Retirement Plan
Employees are eligible for the mandatory 403(b) retirement plan after two years of service. Once eligible, employees are 100% vested and are required to contribute 6% of their salary to the plan and receive a very generous company match. A variety of investment options allows you to create a personalized plan to meet your retirement goals. In addition, a voluntary 403(b) plan is also available.


Vacation
The Medical College of Wisconsin recognizes that a balanced work life is important. Vacation is accrued based on length of service and employee classification.


Holidays, Sick Time & Floating Holidays
The Medical College of Wisconsin observes eight national holidays. Floating holidays give you the flexibility to use time off as you choose. Employees are awarded two floating holidays per calendar year. Sick pay is accrued based on length of service and employee classification.

Short & Long Term Disability
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in company-paid disability plans that replace part of your pay if a qualifying disability occurs.


Tuition Reimbursement
The Medical College of Wisconsin supports continuing education for its employees. The program allows eligible employees to take approved, work-related courses and receive up to $2,550 reimbursement per year for undergraduate and graduate courses.


Dependent Care Reimbursement
The Dependent Care Reimbursement account allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for dependent care expenses up to $5000 per family per calendar year.

Health Care Spending Account
The Health Care Spending account allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health care expenses up to $5000 per calendar year.
