Pocahontas Memorial Hospital is a licensed 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, Level IV Trauma Center & Rural Health Clinic offering a full spectrum of medical services including acute care; 24 hour emergency department and ambulance service; community outreach services and programs; clinical laboratory services; outpatient nursing center including wound care and infusion services; radiology services; rehabilitation including physical, occupational, and speech therapies; respiratory therapies; skilled rehabilitation; Rural Health Clinic providing total family health care; and specialty clinics. The hospital is located in the middle of Pocahontas County.
The county, which is approximately 960 square miles is comprised of state and national parks (65%), the birthplace of seven rivers, is home to Snowshoe Resort known for its premier snow skiing, two steam engine locomotives and the Green Bank Observatory (previously the National Radio Astronomy Observatory). While the population of full time residents is less than 9,000, over a million visitors come here for recreational activities annually.
