Company Overview
The Public Hospitals Authority is a quasi-governmental organization established on 1st July 1999 with the responsibility for managing the public hospitals in The Bahamas; namely
1. Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) – the 405 bed national, general, tertiary care, teaching hospital located in Nassau on the island of New Providence;
2. Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) – encompassing a 367 bed psychiatric hospital and a 128 bed geriatric facility located in Fox Hill, New Providence; and
3. Rand Memorial Hospital (RAND) – an 85 bed facility located in Freeport on the island of Grand Bahama.
In addition to its statutory mandate for the management of public hospitals, the PHA is charged, under delegated authority of the Minister of Health, with responsibility for the management and development of four (4) other areas of the public sector health services system, namely:-
• Material Management Directorate (MMD)
• Bahamas National Drug (Pharmaceutical) Agency (BNDA)
• National Emergency Medical Services (NEMS); and
• The Grand Bahama Community Health Services, which together with the Rand Memorial Hospital form a Local Health System known as the Grand Bahama Health Services (GBHS).
PHA is guided by strategic direction and goals defined by the Ministry of Health to achieve an overall national health vision for Healthy People, Effective Healthcare Delivery Systems and Efficient Operations of Services with the Bahamas and works in conjunction with the Ministry and its agencies to achieve targets for the public sector health services system.
The PHA is governed by a Board of Directors headed by a Chairman. The chief executive of the PHA is the Managing Director, who is assisted by a senior executive committee (SEC) at the corporate office.
Each of the three hospitals is headed by an Executive Management Committee (EMC) consisting of the Hospital Administrator, Medical Chief of Staff, Principal Nursing Officer and Financial Controller. The EMC, which is administratively responsible to the Managing Director, is supported by a network of institutional committees, including a Medical Management Committee consisting of the head of each medical service (known as Chief of Service).
