Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) is a 574 bed public teaching hospital and integrated health system, operated by Santa Clara County, located in San Jose, CA. SCVMC is a Level I trauma center, with a full range of acute care, intensive care, emergency and outpatient services. As a public hospital, SCVMC provides specialized services designed to meet needs as diverse as the community we serve. Many of our specialty medical programs serve the entire San Francisco Bay Area, Northern California and beyond. Company History

[1876] County Hospital built at present site through the efforts of Dr. Benjamin Cory, San Jose's first medical practitioner.
[1905] First training program established - a school of nursing with 3 students.
[1959] First university affiliated residency program is established with Stanford.
[1962] Dr. Norman Nelson becomes Director of Medical Institution. Surgery Department becomes integrated with Stanford. A new Outpatient Department is completed.
[1963] The Institute for Medical Research is formed.
[1968] Demolition of the original hospital building occurs.
[1970] A new, four story Rehabilitation Center is completed. The Department of Medicine's affiliation with Stanford begins. The first Medicine internships begin.
[1974] Dr. Yvonne Russell becomes Director of Medical Institution. Joint recruiting with Stanford begins.
[1976] Santa Clara Valley Medical Center celebrates its Centennial. The Primary Care Division is established in the Department of Medicine. Integrated Medicine fellowships with Stanford begin.
[1990] The West Wing opens with new Intensive Care Unit, Transitional Care Unit, Maternity, Primary Care Residency Program in the Department of Medicine begins.
[1999] The new Main Hospital Building at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center opens. Susan Murphy becomes Director of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
[2001] SCVMC becomes the primary care provider for thousands of children being enrolled in the Children's Health Initiative (CHI), a first in the nation effort that used tobacco settlement money to provide healthcare coverage to kids without healthcare.
[2004] Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approves the construction of Valley Specialty Center, a new model for providing outpatient services more efficiently.
[2009] The new Valley Specialty Center, ambulatory care clinic, including the Cancer and Diabetes Center, opens.
[2014] Women and Children’s Health Services initiative started.
